For thousands of years, plants have provided some of the most amazing remedies and luxuries for the human race in the form of strong, concentrated oils.
But what are essential oils?
They have been used for everything from remedies and medicines to massage oils and perfumes in cultures all around the world.
They are absolutely amazing and can provide a wealth of physical, mental and emotional benefits.
But if you don’t really know what they are, then you are missing out! I’m not exaggerating when I say they can change your life (they changed mine!)
So, What Are Essential Oils Exactly?
Essential oils are basically the essence of a plant.
They are ultra-concentrated ‘plant juice’ that can be obtained from the leaves, flowers, stems, roots or fruit of a plant.
They are also referred to as aromatic oils or aromatherapy oils.
The name ‘essential oils’ comes from the term quintessential oil. ‘Quintessence’ refers to the spirit of the oil, the essence, or the life force.
So in a sense, essential oils are the deepest, truest part of a plant. It’s kind of like the soul or spirit of a person. But the oil is a physical substance that we can access.
These natural plant oils are very aromatic and are sometimes even referred to as ‘toxic’ due to the high concentration of these aromatic compounds (which is why you use essential oils in very small amounts – 1-2 drops at a time).
Less is more with essential oils!
Essential oils are all-natural. They have been used for thousands of years, across many different cultures around the world.
They have been used for medicine and healing, perfumes and skincare, massage and relaxation, and much more!
How Are Oils Made?
The way essential oils are processed is extremely important. To be considered true and pure essential oils, the process for extracting the oils from the plants needs to be completely physical.
This means that no chemicals are used in the process whatsoever, preserving and protecting the oils from contamination that might reduce their effectiveness.
Most essential oils are produced through distillation – rapid heating and cooling to separate the oils from everything else.
There are a handful of oils that don’t use distillation – citrus oils (such as bergamot, lime or grapefruit) are ‘cold-pressed’ from the rind, for example.
These specific processes ensure the purity of the oil, keeping them all-natural and as beneficial as possible!
So why use essential oils? Are they outdated due to modern science?
And what are essential oils used for?
So many things!
Let’s look at the many uses for essential oils!
Essential Oils Uses And Benefits
There are so many benefits to experience from essential oils. With over 90 essential oils, and the fact that they have been used for thousands of years, it would take quite a while to experience it all.
So what are essential oils good for?
They’re good for your body, your mind and your soul!
Essential Oils Benefits For Your Body
Your body can feel the benefits of essential oils through inhaling them, applying them topically on your skin or ingesting them. Here are some of the main essential oil benefits:
Promote Good Sleep
There are a handful of oils that are really good at helping us get good sleep. Lavender is extremely popular to use at night to help relax both our body and our mind so that we can experience deep, restful sleep.
Help Relieve Headaches And Migraines
Certain oils may be able to help provide relief from head tension and aches. The oils can help to reduce stress, increase circulation and relieve pain, ultimately helping to alleviate headaches.
Oils such as lavender, rosemary, eucalyptus and peppermint can each provide some of these benefits.
Support Hair And Skin Health
There are so many ways to use essential oils to support healthy skin and hair.
For your hair, there are many oils that help to moisturize hair, help relieve dandruff and an itchy scalp, thicken hair, reduce oily hair and much more!
You can add oils to existing hair products or make your own using oils and other all-natural ingredients.
For your skin, essential oils can help to fight infections and support comfortable skin. They can be used to moisturize dry skin, help relief pain and itchiness from bug bites, sunburn and other irritations, fight acne and promote overall healthy and glowing skin!

Detox Your Home And Body
Oils can be very cleansing, both externally and internally.
Oils can be used to purify the air in your home and car. They can also be used to create all-natural household products and replace your need to use toxic, harmful chemicals in your home.
With some of the oil based products we have purchased from Young Living, as well as other products we have made from scratch at home, we have removed almost every toxic [and potentially toxic] product from our kitchen, cleaning closet and bathroom!
Diffusing certain oils or applying them topically can support the systems in our body that remove toxins, increasing their effectiveness as they cleanse us from the inside out.
Oils such as lemon, peppermint and ginger are great for this.
Relieve Sore Muscles
Some oils have natural soothing properties that can provide cooling relief when massaged into the skin, or even just inhaled.
Using oils such as peppermint or eucalyptus can provide a cooling sensation and help relieve tension. These are great for using on the neck, shoulders and back when feeling sore.
My husband often does some work at night, once our son goes to sleep. But he’s not a night person and starts getting reallly tired after about 7 or 8 (because he wakes up so early).
He has found that diffusing certain stimulating oils at night has helped him with his energy and ability to focus dramatically!
While I’m upstairs in bed diffusing lavender and StressAway, trying to get tired, he’s down stairs getting pumped up and finishing work projects. He uses oils like peppermint, lemon, lime and a few others to boost his energy (without drinking coffee, which would prevent him from falling asleep altogether).
Support Healthy Digestion
Oils such as ginger, fennel, peppermint and lemongrass can be used to help with digestion and relieve upset stomachs.
They work to relieve indigestion, gas, nausea and other digestive problems.
Boost Immune System
One of the main essential oils uses is to help boost your immune system and fight off sickness and colds.
Rather than waiting until you get sick, and just treating the symptoms, you can help your body fight if off daily to hopefully avoid getting sick in the first place.
Many oils have anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial and antiseptic properties which can help enhance your immune system.
Oils such as oregano, peppermint, lemon and eucalyptus (among others) are commonly used to support your overall health.
Mental Benefits Of Essential Oils
Inhaling essential oils can send signals directly to our brains. These signals can have amazing affects on our mind. Here’s just a few:
Relaxing Your Mind
Obviously, people are stressed, worried, anxious and afraid. You don’t need me to tell me that!
What you need to know is that essential oils can help to relax your mind and calm your nerves.
Many oils have calming properties. They are awesome for using right before bed especially, to help put your mind at ease in hopes of falling asleep a little easier.
I also use certain oils in my car diffuser when driving sometimes to help ease my anxiety (I don’t love driving…)
Lavender, StressAway and bergamot are some of my favorites for this.
Improving Your Focus
Certain oils can help you get into a state of focus and improve your concentration.
Peppermint can help you stay attentive and alert (great for long drives or while you are working).
Frankincense, lemon and patchouli also help a lot to move past distractions and dive deep into whatever it is you are trying to focus on.
Reducing Stress And Anxiety
Many oils have grounding and calming effects on our minds and our bodies.
They can be used to quiet our minds, increase our sense of security, or provide a warm and comforting atmosphere to help us feel safe.
Absolute favorite essential oil blend.
Uplift Emotions And Mood
Some essential oils just make you happy. They can put a smile on your face and make you feel like it’s warm and sunny outside (even if it’s the dead of winter).
They can help bring a sense of hope, joy, purpose and excitement.
Oils such as lemon, lime, patchouli, peppermint, grapefruit, and many more can perk you up and help lift you out of negative emotions quickly.
