Family Goals – The Stay At Home Family

By December 30, 2018 March 5th, 2019 No Comments

Maybe we are a little bit different, or maybe lots of other people have these same hopes, I’m not really sure.

But we hope to be at stay at home family starting in 2019. Our goal is to create a totally flexible family so that we can focus more time, energy and money on the things that matter most in life.

Disclaimer: This might not be right for your family. We are pursuing this and sharing it with others because there might be a few of you out there who want the same thing. It’s not necessarily right or better than a family with 1 or 2 working parents. But I encourage you to read through this to see if it resonates with your family and dreams.

Rather than one parent stay home with the kids and one parent gone most of the day at work, we would like to both stay home. We both want to raise our kids. We both want to teach and empower our kids to be who they were created to be.

We are getting ready to foster a child who will likely be under age 4. We would like that to be a priority for both of us this year, not just the one parent that stays home. We both want to be as involved as possible. And we know how taxing it would be for only 1 parent to be home with our toddler and new foster child most of the day.

We also dream of the ability to travel whenever we want, wherever we want, and for however long we want. We are currently on a month long trip to Florida, escaping the harsh Michigan winter. We would love to be able to do that every year and stay for even longer. We would also love to see many more parts of the world with our whole family, without the rush of having to cram it into a 2 week vacation each year.

And we both want to contribute to our families financial future, as we both have creative, entrepreneurial dreams that we would like to see fulfilled.

All of this is possible and we are taking steps(and have been for the last few years). It’s possible by creating income streams that exist outside of a typical job. Income streams that don’t require us to be at any specific geographic location. Income streams that come either passively or by working online.

While Kelsey has been making money from home for the last few years(more on that in my next post), the goal is for me to come home full time this year. We want our entire income to come in virtually/online/from our own micro-business endeavors.

And our hope is that we can inspire many more families to think, dream and act in the same way.

Why?

We want families to have more freedom to focus on what matters. We all have things that are important to us. We all have big dreams and aren’t sure if they’ll ever come to pass. Things we would do if we had more time, more money, or a little more flexibility.

We want more families to get involved in foster care and adoption because the need is so great and the opportunity to change lives is so real. However, many families simply don’t have the time, energy or room in their lives for a big thing like that. But if both parents can stay home and make money doing something that energizes them rather than weighs them down, and do it on their own time, than maybe, just maybe, they’ll be more likely to say yes to taking in a child that needs a home.

We hope that you would follow along with our journey as a family, which we will document as a whole on this blog. But specifically, the Inspire and Cultivate category is meant to inspire you to dream of the life you and your family were created to live, and to cultivate those dreams, work at them day by day so you can actually see them come to pass.

And even if you don’t feel like 2 parents at home is necessary or right for your family(totally fine if not, every family wants and needs something different), we hope to encourage you to

  • Consider foster care or adoption, which is completely fine to pursue with regular jobs.
  • Utilize some of the tools and opportunities we present to create freedom in your life, schedule and finances.
  • Find more ways to be intentional with your family(i’m not great at this, but I’m working on it 😉

Thanks for reading, I am excited to contribute to Make and Tend and to work alongside my wife on something cool.
