Wolfberries are hard to find. They come from pretty remote regions around the world. But these wolfberry benefits make it worth any effort you need to put in to get some.
These tiny red powerhouses are full of so much goodness that it’s hard to contain in one post.
They can support our bodies in so many ways making them one of the most valuable foods to add to your diet. Unfortunately, they aren’t quite as common as I would like.
But there are more and more ways to enjoy these little berries, so let’s dig into what they can actually do you for you and your body, as well as my favorite way to enjoy them!
What The Heck Are Wolfberries And Why Am I Just Now Learning About Them?
Well, you probably have heard of them. Wolfberries are also known as goji berries.
And let’s be real, we all know about goji berries because of those little chocolate covered acai berries that make us think we are eating healthy. The brand added chocolate covered goji berries, and that’s probably our only experience with them.
Anyways, I’ll continue to refer to them as wolfberries.
These incredible berries come from the remote region in China called Ningxia. Wolfberries have been used in and around this region for over 2,000 years for spiritual, medicinal and dietary purposes.
They have a distinct, bright red color thanks to the level of beta carotene they contain (which other fruits and vegetables have, such as carrots or sweet potatoes)
Due to the obvious geographical constraints, these berries still aren’t nearly as mainstream as most fruits and superfoods, though you can find them in health food stores and online. You can easily get them in dried form for adding onto cereal, yogurt, etc.
You can also get NingXia Red from Young Living, which is an incredible superfruit juice that combines wolfberries with other superfruits as well as essential oils for an extremely supportive and delicious drink.
So what’s the secret that makes them so wonderful? Well, let’s dive in!
7 Incredible Wolfberry Benefits
1. Wolfberries are loaded with antioxidants To Fight Off Harmful Substances
We all know we want more antioxidants in our lives, but do we honestly know why?
Antioxidants fight off free radicals, which are substances that produce cancer. The antioxidants in wolfberries include vitamin C, zeaxanthin, and carotenoids. These work to slow tumor growth and remove harmful substances from the body.
2. Improves Energy Levels And Mood
Recent studies have shown that wolfberries can promote an overall sense of wellbeing and increased energy levels. These studies suggest that wolfberries can help reduce fatigue and stress, as well as gastrointestinal function.
The people in the study drank goji juice for 2 weeks straight. This is definitely why I’m a big fan of drinking NingXia daily as well!
3. Wolfberries Support The Eyes
It sounds totally random, but the antioxidants in wolfberries are believed to support strong and healthy vision and fight off eye diseases that typically come with aging.
4. Immune System Booster
Again, coming thanks to the antioxidants (no wonder we want these so much), wolfberries can help boost the immune system.
The Vitamin A and C it contains are foundational for fighting off common sickness.
5. High Levels Of Beta Carotene
Beta Carotene helps with a lot of different things such as eyes, bones, and skin. Wolfberries are one of the highest sources of beta carotene among edible plants.
You can often find beta carotene in supplements, but it’s always great when you can get something straight from the source!
(Fun fact – the word ‘beta carotene’ originates from the 1800s, which was first discovered in carrots)
6. Supports And Protects The Skin
Due to the high levels of beta carotene they contain, wolfberries are also known to support healthy skin.
Beta carotene is often an essential ingredient in skincare products that help to reduce irritation and promote healthy skin.
It can be used to protect skin from sunburn, especially in those who sunburn easily. It may reduce the skin’s sensitivity to the sun.
7. Wolfberries Are Easy To Add To Your Diet
Sure, this benefit is a little different from the ones above, but a benefit nonetheless!
Both fresh and dry wolfberries can be added to smoothies and smoothie bowls, cereal, oatmeal, trail mix, yogurt, cookies and more! Eat them by the handful.
Or grab some juice. You can find goji berry juice in many health food stores. Or you can pick up some NingXia Red from Young Living, which adds a few other superfruits, as well as essential oils to the mix!
It’s literally amazing and I drink it every day.
